| Status/Comments: | APPROVED. Shangri-La Hotel & Resorts plans its first U.S. establishment in part of the building. Although the tower is situated only three blocks west of Trump Tower on the opposite bank of the Chicago River, the developers have had far less success pre-selling their condominiums, and the project has been slow getting off the ground. For anyone unfamiliar with Chicago or the building's site, the tower's parcel appears impossibly small for a 90-story building; it's a tiny -- and one cannot fully stress how much so -- parking lot that's been one of the few decrepit lots along the entirety of the riverfront trophy street, Wacker Drive. The parcel is about the same size as that of the adjacent tower to the west, which is less than half as tall as Waterview. Interestingly, the developer's renderings fail to illustrate how much of a new skyline presence this tower will create. It will be some 380 feet taller than its highly visible neighbor to the east, the 668-foot R.R. Donnelly building. |
