| Status/Comments: | PROPOSED. Strategic Hotel Capital acquired tourist/business-class hotel with plans to turn it into ultra-luxury hotel/condo building competing with other top-end establishments along the Magnificent Mile. New tower would replace the current hotel's north tower, which was built as a separate 26-story hotel in 1961 and has drawn criticism for being an eyesore, with its windowless concrete facade facing Michigan Avenue. As part of the development, however, Strategic would renovate the 42-story historic south tower, which is capped by a distinctive Islamic-style dome. The Art Deco building debuted in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club, with its structure comprising various elements of Middle Eastern and classical European architecture (see Emporis photo). |
