| Status/Comments: | PROPOSED. Would rise directly across Michigan Avenue from the John Hancock Building, but set far back from the street behind the Fourth Presbyterian Church -- the 1914 historic landmark that fronts on the Avenue but sold its air rights and back lot to developers during 2003 capital campaign. Despite architectural praise for proposed tower, many area residents complained of shadows it would cast on Michigan Avenue, claiming the open space of its plot was responsible for preventing Hancock tower from blocking out all light in the area. Growing neighborhood movement to fight "canyonization" of Michigan Avenue. As a result, rumors abound that project has been abandoned. Other sources say developers already too deeply invested; said to be tweaking proposal in response to community input. |
