Status/Comments: APPROVED. Envisioned as an elliptical cylinder clad in glass and aluminum, it was to have become an instant Chicago landmark with a square cut-out in the upper floors. However, engineering of the architectural feature proved uneconomical, so developers opted to close the hole. Solution begat new problem: filled in space put the building over its square footage allowance under zoning, forcing developer to consider shaving off a few stories. Finalized new design approved in November 2005. Property currently houses church and offices of Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, with whom LR is partnering in the venture. Church itself will remain at 65 E. Huron, while offices on other parts of block will be razed for new tower.

On December 15, 2005, the Diocese posted the following update on its Web site: "[LR Development] is partnering with Tucson, Ariz.- based Canyon Ranch, a highly respected health and wellness company, for building a residential community of up to 430 condominiums and a 65,000 square foot health and healing center in the new high rise. As with earlier plans, the new building will also house diocesan and cathedral offices and conference space."
